Meeting was held at the Redmond High School (RHS) Band Room and was called to order at 7:05pm by Julie Turner, Band Booster President.
Julie Turner (President), Teresa Chiarelli (Vice President), Amanda Cote (Treasurer), Wendy Wilkes (Secretary), Andy Robertson (Band Director), Minna Stelzner (Band President), Jeff Wilkes, Cris Berns, Dee Dee Tilley, Lynelle Allen, Adam Barr, Diane Durant, Cathy Dietz.
WELCOME
Julie Turner welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Last month’s Meeting Minutes were presented.
Jeff Wilkes motioned to accept the Meeting Minutes as presented, Andy Robertson seconded the motion and the minutes were approved.
There was discussion regarding the presentation of the Meeting Minutes. The question was should we continue to print out multiple hard copies, or not. The decision was made to only bring a single hard copy to the Booster Meeting. The minutes will be sent to the Booster Committee for approval prior to the next month’s meeting. Once they are approved they will be posted online so that anyone who wants to review them prior to the meeting (or after for that matter) will be able to read them online.
Amanda Cote distributed copies of the financial report. A few noteworthy items:
Jeff Wilkes motioned to accept the treasurer’s report as presented, Teresa Chiarelli seconded the motion and the report was approved.
Pep Band is going swimmingly. The kids have 4 new songs that they’re playing. The design has been locked for the Pep Band T-shirts, and we’re working with the t-shirt vendor to get the shirts made.
Jazz Band is also going very well, considering the hour that the kids have to be at school.
We have our first concert a week from tomorrow. The discussion regarding the girl’s blouses is still ongoing but they can wear black tops, as long as they’re within the guidelines.
Round Up is coming.
~The kids sold ice cream and Italian sodas during the Round Up.
The band will be performing during the Homecoming assembly.
The Entertainment book sales did not seem to sell very well. The car wash is coming up.
Pep Band is doing very well. The band is going along well on its own spirit.
We will have all three groups for the concert next week – Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble. We did tell the Sophomores about Dairy Queen after the concerts. J
The Northlake Jazz Band Festival at Bothell High School this year is on Oct. 25th. We need a couple of parent chaperones that can spend the whole day with the kids at the festival.
The Honor Band concert is going to be Nov. 9th. There will be practices before the concert, of course. The conductor this year will be Gerard Morris. We had 26 players nominated from our band this year.
The new instruments are working out great. Thanks!
The Entertainment Books sale is over.
Distribution of the uniforms is going great. Thanks so much for all of the effort in getting them handed out.
Trips: Andy is still evaluating the Spring festival options. The Portland and Vancouver festivals are still the top contenders. Portland is May 5-12, and Vancouver is May 24-27th. He is also still looking into attendance at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.
Ad Sales: Cathy Dietz, Diane Durant
We have made our $2100 goal in Ad Sales, though some funds still need to be collected. Program updates have been submitted to Adam. Getting an early start (mid-August) has made a really big difference. Thanks!!
Concert Programs: Adam Barr
Update on programs: We have one! J
The size of the program for the first concert is consistent with the size from last year. It would really be great to get some submissions from the students for the program cover art.
Adam will try working with Andy to try getting the senior section in the final program this year. We did try last year, but it wasn’t able to get full participation from the kids. We have to have something from everyone in order to have the senior section in the program.
Raffles at Concerts: Becky Holtzinger, Lisa Burlingame
We have 4 items for the concert, but we really need more donations. Diane talked to Moore Brothers Music about lessons and they said that they’d be happy to donate some, but they need a procurement form.
Red Robin Dine-Out Night: Dee Dee Tilley
Discussions have begun. They will give us 10% on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. We have to give the flyers out before the participants arrive for dinner. We need to decide on a night – Dee Dee is trying to lock it down.
Brown Bear Car Wash: Teresa Chiarelli
The sale will be running from 10/21 through 11/4. The last day for students to turn in money for tickets is Friday 11/18 – Band Booster volunteers will collect funds in class.
Fruit Sales: Gretchen and Matt Loschen
They will sync up with Becky Munsell on the process which she built for managing the program.
Garlic Jim’s: Need volunteer coordinator
When should we do this? It seems like February will probably be the best time, but we still need a coordinator. It is a pretty easy fundraiser to organize, and the kids really make a lot of money for the effort they put in.
Gift Wrap:
Amanda checked with RTC and is still waiting for a reply on whether there are opportunities for us to play music during the holidays or anything.
Scholarship Committee: Diane Durant
Robin needs to give Diane “the book”.
Tailgate Parties: Elizabeth Burns, Robin Schaeperkoetter
Elizabeth did the first two tailgates, then Jeff Wilkes did one, and Robin will do the last two. Thanks to everyone who has pitched in on making them a success this year.
Uniforms: Lynelle Allen
We are done with the distribution of the Senior’s uniforms and are almost finished with the Juniors.
Band Booster Website: Wendy Wilkes
The band booster website is: http://www.redmondmustangbandboosters.org.
Sponsor of the Month: we can highlight a Sponsor of the Month on the Booster’s web site. If we want to do that then Cathy just needs to send the information on what should be published to Wendy.
When we signed up for the web site we did a 3 year registration on the domain, but it looks like the hosting services are only an annual charge. We are up for renewal again, and we have $120 in the budget for annual web site fees. We have the option to renew for 1-5 years. If we renew the Hosting and e-mail then the cost is $71.22 for one year or $350.84 for 5 years. To renew for 2 more years, bringing the expiration in line with the domain name registration, the cost would be $141.74.
Teresa Chiarelli moved to purchase 2 years and bring all of the recurring fees into the same renewal cycle, Jeff Wilkes seconded the motion. Passed without objection.
Student Sodexho – lunch hours in the cafeteria. Pegeen Nelson will get the information for Teresa regarding the students who have participated so Teresa can get the information into the student’s accounts.
The Band Booster treasurer needs information on the Orchestra Boosters – we have some $$ for them.
Jeff Wilkes motioned to adjourn the meeting, Amanda Cote seconded the motion and the meeting was adjourned at 8:24pm.
9/13, 10/11, 11/15, 12/13, 1/10, 2/14, 3/13, 4/10, 5/8
Meeting was held at the Redmond High School (RHS) Band Room and was called to order at 7:05 by Julie Turner, Band Booster President.
Julie Turner (President), Teresa Chiarelli (Vice President), Amanda Cote (Treasurer), Wendy Wilkes (Secretary), Andy Robertson (Band Director), Minna Stelzner (Band President), Diane Durant, Cathy Dietz, Gretchen Loschen, Becky Holtzinger, Lisa Burlingame, Jeff Wilkes.
Julie Turner welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Introductions by all of the attendees and board members.
Welcome to a new year!
Julie said that she had gone to the web site to look at previous Band Booster meeting minutes, but was unable to locate them. Wendy agreed to investigate, and if the meeting minutes were unavailable to make them available again.
~ Investigation revealed that the meeting minutes were in fact still on the web site, but perhaps things should be moved around to make them a bit more discoverable.
Amanda Cote distributed copies of the financial report. A few noteworthy items:
Jeff Wilkes motioned to accept the treasurer’s report as presented, Diane Durant seconded the motion and the report was approved.
The Welcome Back BBQ went very well. We had great participation, and everyone had a great time. Thank you Boosters!
So far the Pep Band rehearsals have been going very well. The kids sound great. Minna and Gabe did a great job of getting everyone excited, and the kids sounded great at their first football game. Pep Band T-shirt designs start next week.
Band council elections are next week.
There is an ASB fund raiser coming and is important. The ASB funds which come to the band have been reduced, so the fund raiser is needed. They’ll be selling the Entertainment books, and sales start 9/14.
Football vs. Eastlake is coming Oct 7th!
Band forms are due. They were sent to Parents in e-mail, and Mr. Robertson will not be printing any more. If we wanted to we could put them on the website for download.
The sousaphone approved for purchase at the last Booster Meeting has been received, and it is great.
The band has about 105 students this year. That is slightly lower than last year.
Construction at the school was supposed to have been started early this summer, but it did finally start this week. The school needs to get ready for incoming freshmen next year.
Jazz Band auditions start on Thursday, Sept. 15th.
Gretchen asked about combined band/orchestra. The Mustang Symphony is an afterschool program which combines instruments from both. Contact Paula Ferguson for details – but we think that they meet Tue/Fri after school for 2 hours each time.
Lots of positive energy in the Pep Band. Everyone has a great attitude and has been very welcoming to the new sophomores.
Jazz Band is seeing a lot of new faces. We seem to be a little thin on sax players.
There is some frustration for the girls regarding their uniforms. Tina J is driving an effort to see if the girls can all agree on another top (within guidelines). If they can come up with a top that everyone agrees to, we may be able to change to that top. We’re at least taking a look into it.
Deadlines:
Back to School BBQ: Diane Durant
Excellent turnout! Everyone had a great time. Thanks so much to everyone who helped. It really would not have been possible without help from so many volunteers. Suggestions for next year’s Welcome Back BBQ: We usually overbuy for the BBQ and use the supplies for the first tailgate party. Do we want to keep that recommendation?
Uniforms: Lynelle Allen
Uniforms were cleaned, repaired, catalogued and returned. Amazing work! Thanks to Lynelle for all of her extraordinary effort!
Ad Sales: Cathy Dietz, Diane Durant
Ad Sales are going well. We have $1800 promised so far. Great job getting started super early – that is the key. A lot of potential ad purchasers need to be contacted prior to their budget planning. Contacting them early gave them the opportunity to get the RHS ad into their budget. Also, please remember that individuals can also make donations directly to the Band Boosters. The folks that donate can be called out in the next Concert program.
Concert Programs: Adam Barr
Julie will follow up with Adam to make him aware of the section for donors in the program. Amanda will provide the list of people who have made direct donations.
Fruit Sales Fundraiser: Need volunteer coordinator
Last year’s Fruit Sales brought in over $2800 for our students. This is a great program where students sell cases of high quality fresh fruit. All of the proceeds are deposited into accounts specifically for the student that makes each sale. It is a bit of work, but is a very well organized program at this point. The coordinator is responsible for announcing the fund raiser to the kids, coordinating with the supplier, and organizing the delivery. The kids have a lot of fun sorting the fruit (who knew??) and we definitely have repeat customers every year who ask about the program.
Tailgate Parties: Elizabeth Burns
The first tailgate party went very well. The good was great, the volunteers were awesome. Elizabeth will be out of town for the next football game, so we need someone to coordinate.
~ Jeff Wilkes was volunteered to coordinate the spaghetti feed.
Band Booster Website: Wendy Wilkes
The band booster website is: http://www.redmondmustangbandboosters.org. We discussed possibly creating a facebook page for the Pep Band. Minna will talk to Ben Chow about getting access to admin credentials for the page.
Raffles at Concerts: Becky Holtzinger, Lisa Burlingame
At each concert the Band Boosters hold a raffle to raise money for the general booster fund.
~ Becky Holtzinger and Lisa Burlingame volunteered to coordinate the raffles for the concerts. Thank you VERY much!
Scholarship Committee: Diane Durant
The scholarship committee starts up after the Holiday season. Seniors apply for the scholarships and a group of band parents review the applications and choose three recipients. There are two meetings, then the scholarship announcements are made at the final concert of the year.
~ Diane Durant volunteered to lead the scholarship committee.
Brown Bear Car Wash Fundraiser: Teresa Chiarelli
We’re looking for 2 volunteers to help our coordinator starting the first week of October. The Brown Bear car wash ticket sales is one of our popular fund raisers. This enables the students raise money that they can use toward band trips. Time will be spent in a few shifts of handing out and collecting coupons/monies with the students.
~ Teresa Chiarelli volunteered to coordinate the fund raiser.
Garlic Jim’s Fundraiser: Need volunteer coordinator
Garlic Jim’s sponsors a fund raiser which allows the students to keep ALL of the proceeds from their sales efforts. This is a very popular fund raiser, and coordination is very simple.
Cell Phone Recycle Fundraiser: Need volunteer coordinator
Last year we made less than $10 through the cell phone recycling effort. Wendy Wilkes motioned to stop participating in the cell phone recycle program, Diane Durant and Jeff Wilkes seconded the motion and the proposal was was approved.
We’ve lost two of our bigger fund raising activities this year. We are looking for new ideas on what we can do to help the kids raise money to pay for events.
We need to confirm our parent volunteers from the Booster Meeting last May. If you are missing from the list please contact Julie Turner.
• Teresa Chiarelli is coordinating the Student Accounts list. All the forms need to be turned in ASAP.
• Mr. Robertson requested that we move the meeting originally scheduled for Nov. 8th. It conflicts with the HS Honor Band, so he cannot attend. We agreed to move the meeting to Nov. 15th.
• There are three contenders for the Band Trip for 2011-2012. Andy will decide which trip we are going to be going on, and we can start coordination.
• Reminder to have Julie send mail to Andy so he can send mail on her behalf to request volunteers and donations.
• Thank You cards from the Band Kids to the Sponsors need to be sent out.
• Someone left a spoon at the hotdog/hamburger tailgate – please contact Julie Turner if you’d like it back. She has lots of spoons and isn’t trying to keep yours on purpose.
Jeff Wilkes motioned to adjourn the meeting, Amanda Cote seconded the motion and the meeting was adjourned.
Regular Meeting Schedule: 9/13, 10/11, 11/15, 12/13, 1/10, 2/14, 3/13, 4/10, 5/8
Dear Parents of Redmond High School Band Students,
Welcome to the Redmond Mustang Band Boosters! As the parent of a band student you are a member of this organization. We work to support the band program at Redmond High School and the director, Mr. Andrew Robertson.
We have several annual events and programs:
These are just a few ways we support our students this year. We are always looking for another helping hand. Be sure to fill out and return the form included with this packet so we can include you!
Our officers and committee members are:
Teresa Chiarelli (VP), Amanda Cote (Treasurer), Wendy Wilkes (Secretary & Web Master), Lynelle Allen (uniforms), Cathy Dietz/Diane Durant (Ad Sales), Adam Barr (Concert Programs), Diane Durant/Julie Turner (Back to School BBQ)
New Opportunities:
To run any quality program fundraising is also important. We ask you to consider donating $25 to the Band Boosters and you will receive a line of acknowledgement in our concert programs. We also solicit larger donations in order to fund purchases such as instruments and uniforms. Depending on your company, it may be easiest to do this during corporate giving campaigns. We are a 501C-3 organization and do qualify for matching fund programs. If you have a business or patronize a local business, ask if they would be interested in placing an advertisement in the concert programs. Cathy Dietz and Diane Durant would be happy to help you with this.
For contact email information, updated schedules committee and volunteer opportunities throughout the year, check out our web site at www.Redmondmustangbandboosters.org.
We would love to meet you in person at the Welcome BBQ on August 31st. Join us for a burger and a visit. Mr. Robertson and many of the booster board will be there to answer your questions.
We hope to see you there!

Message from the Band President
Dear Redmond High School band students:
I am delighted to welcome you to an exciting musical year for 2011-2012! I hope you will share my enthusiasm for all the fun things that we will be able to do this year.
In the fall and winter, you will dance and cheer along with the Pep Band (and superfans), as we blast our way through the football and basketball seasons. In the spring, the school musical will give you an opportunity to play in pit orchestra. Near the end of the year, we will have our hugely popular band bowling event. Most importantly, you will get to experience daily life as a member of the band, enhance your skills as a musician, and meet tons of cool new people.
Outside of band class, you can challenge yourself by participating in the All-State Honor Band, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble, the PLU Honor Band, the Solo-Ensemble contests, and the Music in May festival at Pacific University.
All of these opportunities will require a time commitment, but I know that you will be able to get a lot out of them.
Please join me at the Back-To-School Band Barbecue to meet me and your fellow bandies. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to
talk to me or Mr. Robertson. Your ideas are always appreciated.
Again, I am excited for you to join us, and I look forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Minna Stelzner

Band President’s Report
Ben reported that the seniors are looking forward to the end of the school year! There are 38 graduating seniors. Compiling a senior supplement to the program has not been very successful. Ben suggested that next year the Boosters use a form to collect all the information. This year it was difficult to get 100% participation.
Parents and students can still purchase personal advertisements to honor graduating seniors.
Music in May
Three students have been selected to participate in the ‘Music in May’ festival at Pacific University (Forest Grove, Oregon). These students are Ben Chao, Sharon Lee, and Minna Stelzner. They will be traveling down to Forest Grove on May 26th.

During the clinic the band recorded a DVD. Because of licensing agreements with Disneyland, Mr. Robertson is unable to distribute copies of this DVD or post it on any website. Fortunately, Mr. Robertson was able to play the DVD at this meeting. The students did a terrific job!

Instrument(s) Purchase
Mr. Robertson requested that the Band Boosters purchase a refurbished Sousaphone for $1,222 – with trade in of an old Sousaphone. This is a very good price. If it works well, he’d like to purchase a second refurbished Sousaphone. Teresa Chiarelli motioned to approve the purchase, Lori Rakonza seconded. Sousaphone purchase approved!
In addition to the Sousaphone, Mr. Roberston is considering purchasing a Flugelhorn for the Jazz Band and possibly a new Bass Clarinet. The Band Boosters reminded Mr. Robertson that they want like to make these types of purchases.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Treasurer’s Report
Joanie Chinn distributed copies of the financial report. A few noteworthy items about the Disney Trip: 1) The group did not end up renting a vehicle at Disneyland (this saved approximately $897) and 2) The cost for the Wilkes to graciously drive the truck with instruments to Los Angeles was less than budgeted (this was approximately $800 less than the budgeted amount). These savings were used to off-set the increased admission cost at Universal Studios. When all the costs were tallied up, the Band Boosters had approximately $900 remaining in the Disneyland fund. Mr. Robertson suggested using these funds to finance a bowling night for the band. This idea was discussed in more detail later in the meeting.
Lori Rakonza motioned to approve the budget, Amanda Cote seconded the motion, and the report was accepted as submitted.
Band Director’s Report
Northlake Band Festival
Mr. Robertson thanked all the band boosters who helped to make the Northlake Band festival a success. This year the festival was held at Redmond High School. It ran fairly smoothly – there were only a very concerns about storage. The Wind Ensemble scored straight 1-‘s very good scores!
Disneyland
GOOD, EXHAUSTING trip! Mr. Robertson had a special thanks to all the chaperones. Mr. Robertson reported that the kids ‘nailed’ their performance.
Suggestions for next time:
Concerts
The final concert of the year will be on May 25th. The Jazz band will be participating in the Bellevue Jazz Festival on Saturday, May 14th.
Band President’s Report
Disneyland
The Band President, Ben Choa, reported that ‘Disneyland was awesome!!!!’ There were a few curfew issues the first couple nights but the upper classmen ‘mentored’ the lower classmen about expectations.
The clinic was really good and very valuable. All the band members seemed to enjoy the trip. Giving students an option to relax at the hotel for a couple hours one afternoon was a good break. Ben suggested doing this for the next Disney trip.
Music in May
Three students have been selected to participate in the ‘Music in May’ festival at Pacific University (Forest Grove, Oregon). These students are Ben Choa, Sharon Lee, and Minna Stelzner. Congratulations!
Final Concert Music
The Wind Ensemble has been working on music from ‘An American in Paris’ for their final concert. Another option is a Star Wars Medley – but this was performed last year.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Uniforms – (Lynelle Allen)
Uniforms are all ready for Disney! Lynelle has done a great job with this. Mr. Robertson reiterated that well-kept uniforms are VERY important to Disney. THANK YOU, Lynelle!
Ad Sales – (Dede Wren)
Dede didn’t have anything new to report. The year is winding down.
Concert Programs – (Joanie Chinn –Adam Barr)
Adam reported that the program production is going very well.
Senior Tribute Program
For the final program of the year, Joanie is working with Ben and Chelsea to compile short bios and pictures of all graduating senior (32 of them). The deadline for these bios will be May 2nd.
Raffle Items (Amanda Cote, Julie Turner, and Dede Wren)
Raffle items available for the next concert include two Starbuck’s gift packs, a golf certificate, a certificate for bread at Panera, and a backpack cooler. Please continue to support our sponsors!
Scholarship Committee (Robin Schaeperkoetter)
Scholarship applications will be due on April 26, 2011. The committee will meet a couple times to review and to discuss the applications. Awards will be announced at the band’s final concert on May 25, 2011. Robin will send Wendy the correct application to post on the website.
Band Booster Website – (Stephen Rakonza & Wendy Wilkes)
The band booster website is: http://www.redmondmustangbandboosters.org. Wendy is working with Stephen to transition the website management to GoDaddy. This transition should occur by the end of the school year. Please send Stephen (Stephen@rakonza.com) any photos that you’d like to post on the site.
Links to videos from the Disneyland trip are posted on the website. Check them out!
Other Student Fundraising Opportunities –
Dine Out Night at Ruby’s
The Band Boosters earned $188 from the Ruby’s dine out event last month. According to Joanie Chinn this amount is very similar to the amount earned at Red Robin several months ago.
Disney Trip – Clinic DVD
During the clinic the band recorded a DVD. Because of licensing agreements with Disneyland, Mr. Robertson is unable to distribute copies of this DVD or post it on any website. However, it may be possible to play it at the next Band Booster meeting. Stay tuned.
NEW BUSINESS
Bowling?
Mr. Robertson suggested using the remaining money from the Disneyland budget to help off-set cost for a night of bowling. This event has been VERY popular with students. Lori Rakonza will call Tech City bowling to discuss possible dates. She stressed that students will need to pre-pay for this. Tech City will need a head count to reserve the correct number of lanes. One possible date is Thursday, May 5th because the following day is a vacation day. Ben Choa cautioned people that the APUSH test is May 6th. It’s likely that attendance would be low because many of the band members would be taking the APUSH test.
