NLMEA Solo & Ensemble

February 10th, 2024

Redmond High School

Solo & Ensemble is a FANTASTIC opportunity for Redmond High School students to get extra experience and practice preparing and performing. Students receive adjudication, a scoring sheet, and some in-person feedback.

Director Edwards strongly encourages everyone to sign up. The practice that goes into preparing a Solo & Ensemble entry helps students grow, builds literacy skills, and pushes musicianship forward. Students can register to play a solo on their instrument, or as an ensemble with other RHS students. All students are eligible to participate!

This is also a state contest qualifying event - students receiving a rating of a One (a high score) are automatically eligible and may be considered for invitation to the state contest in April.

More information on this event can be found here: State Solo and Ensemble Contest - Washington Music Educators Association (wmea.org)

Register

Registration window: December 10 - January 10

Solos are $15 each - Ensemble are $10 per member. Ensembles can be either Small (2-4) or Large (5-16). Ensembles register as the category that makes up the majority of the members of the group (3 flutes and a trumpet would be a small woodwind ensemble). The Solo & Ensemble form must be completed by Wednesday, January 10, 2024 @ 1:00pm. One form per entry, please. No double time slots will be offered for our contest. Any registrations turned in after this date will NOT be eligible for the state contest in April.

Preparation

To help prepare all students for this opportunity, there are a few supports and opportunities in place.

  • Students will be assigned to a small ensemble for a small ensemble performance unit in November with a graded performance in class. Music will be assigned to the groups by their teacher in order to ensure that it is appropriate difficulty for all students to be successful. Practice time will occur during class as well.

  • Students will have a second opportunity to prepare ensembles during December/January.

  • The Student Showcase Concert on January 31st is an opportunity for Ensembles to perform for the home crowd and help prepare for the Solo & Ensemble contest.

  • Students can always seek support from their teachers for feedback on their group as well!

Volunteer

For the past two years, Redmond High School has hosted our regional competition (North Lake Music Educators Association Solo & Ensemble) to glowing reviews of the amazing organizational prowess of our Performing Arts Directors. With hosting comes the great opportunity to show off our campus! We need YOUR help to make this event a positive and successful experience for the thousands of visitors who will walk our hallways. Since this is a state-qualifying event, it is important that our volunteers are adequately prepared to ensure fairness for every student performer. If you are interested in volunteering, please plan to attend one of our upcoming mandatory training meetings:

  • Wednesday, January 10 @ 6:00-6:45pm (RHS B100), OR

  • Wednesday January 17 @ 6:00-6:45pm (RHS B100)

*Work for a company like Microsoft or Boeing that provides matching funds for volunteered time? Please consider directing those matched funds to our Choir, Band, or Orchestra boosters!

Email Mr. Fitzgerald with any questions! jfitzgerald@lwsd.org

Concessions

Your Redmond Mustang Band Boosters are running a concession stand at Solo & Ensemble. We will be offering hot coffee and tea, a variety of cold drinks, donuts, bagels and cream cheese, and lots of sweets to help keep that energy up. Mid-day our menu will expand to include a few savory options.

If you are able, please sign up to bring in a food donation or for a time slot to volunteer at the table during the event.
